Scaling and Root debridement


The initial stage of treatment is often treated with a non-surgical periodontal therapy called scaling and root Debridement.

This deep cleaning procedure involves removal of plaque and tartar deposits beneath the gumline.

The tooth roots may also be planed to smooth the root surface allowing the gum tissue to heal and reattach to the tooth. Local anaesthetic may be used to numb your gums and roots, providing more comfort during the procedure.  As part of this phase of treatment, we have a Perioscope which a state of the art diagnostic tool which features a miniaturised digital video technology that enables the clinician to diagnose and treat areas below the gum line without the discomfort and inconvenience of surgery.

Antibiotics or irrigation with anti-microbials (chemical agents or mouth rinses) may be recommended to help control the growth of bacteria that create toxins and cause periodontitis.

In the early stages of periodontal disease, scaling and root debridement may be all that is needed to get the condition under control. However, in a some patients, periodontal surgery (may be necessary to restore periodontal health).
